BoxOffice critic Richard Mowe wrote that, “It will always be risky to tamper with a well-known and well-loved franchise, especially one that seemed to have reached its natural conclusion. But behold: J.J. Abrams, who made Mission Impossible III and the hit TV series Lost, has achieved the impossible with Star Trek, and reinvented it such that it should attract new admirers and please the loyal fan base alike.”

The main reason is that key markets such as China, Russia and Brazil can’t seem to get enough of major American films. The increase in overseas grosses for popular sequels since 2009 has been staggering. Key releases such as The Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Taken 2 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 2 had no problem topping the overseas gross of the films they followed.
